Once you've found the right association to join, to leverage your membership you'll need to join a committee. Take some time to learn what each committee does before choosing one. If this takes more than a year to figure out if the committee is the right fit, you're wasting your time and membership.

Important: Not All Committees are Created Equal
One would think all committees are the same. In a way they are because they all contribute to fulfilling the mission and activities of the association. However, they are not perceived as being the same. Some are viewed as being more important or having more prestige. In addition, some committees will leverage your membership more than others. It's important to know how to approach this successfully.

Strategies for Choosing the Right Committee
One strategy that is frequently overlooked is simple, but highly effective. Begin with a strength of yours. For example, Heather, an accountant by profession, joined the finance committee. Since accounting was her profession, doing the work for the finance committee was both easy and quick. In addition, Heather used her knowledge to streamline the work flow process so committee meetings took less time. As a result, she was viewed as a star, tapped for other committees and eventually ended up serving as president.

A great strategy to use is becoming involved in planning events. These provide a wealth of opportunities, if you know what to look for. Some of these include registering people at monthly meetings where you'll accelerate your opportunity to meet and get to know people.

Conferences and conventions require picking the right sub-committee or area. For example, planning the education sessions gives you the opportunity to contact skilled, knowledgeable and reputable speakers within your industry. Hosting them also often provides the opportunity for one-on-one contact. And, if the opportunity exists, introducing a presenter allows you a brief moment to introduce yourself as you start the introduction.
A third strategy is specialized; however, if you fit the requirements, it is a terrific leverage tool. If you have the ability to write well, joining the newsletter or publication committee can greatly increase your visibility. You'll have the opportunity to report on events and interview well-known people in your field. The key here is to write well. An ordinary write-up won't do.

Reduce Your Time; Leverage Your Work
Just as you need to show up once you join an association, you need to show up for committee meetings. Then you need to be competent. Actually, you need to be more than competent. You can leverage your committee work so you spend less time while increasing your profile.
